Clean Car Tips

Vehicle Emission Testing is not the only way to make your car clean air friendly. Below are tips to help Treasure the Valley’s Air:

Get an emissions test

  • A well-maintained car pollutes less and gets more miles to the gallon

Combine errands

  • Plan to get week’s errands done in one or two days
  • Try to permanently cut out all unnecessary car trips

Refuel when it’s cool

  • On hot summer days, hold off refueling your car until after 6 p.m.
  • This will keep smog forming vapors out of the air during the heat of the day when ozone formation occurs

No topping off

  • Stop at the first click when the pump shuts off
  • Topping off your tank releases additional smog-forming vapors

Click it

  • Tighten your gas cap after filling up
  • Up to 30 gallons of gas evaporates from a car’s tank each year due to a loose gas cap
  • Every 4,000 leaky gas caps contribute one ton of pollution to our air

Don’t Idle

  • If you think you’ll be sitting in the same spot for more than 30-seconds, turn off the engine
  • Idling your vehicle wastes gas, pollutes the air, and can damage your engine components.
